Pool Liner Leaking? Know How To Find And Fix It

If you have spent the money to invest in a swimming pool, you'll want to take the necessary steps to keep it working great over the years. Unfortunately, a pool liner can leak due to normal wear and tear. You'll need to know how to find the leak and make the necessary repairs.

Find The Leak

One way to find where a pool liner is leaking is by using some food coloring and a dive mask. You likely have some place in the pool where you think the leak is happening, and you can test it by getting creative with some food coloring. Put some in a syringe so that you can take it underwater without having the food coloring leak prematurely. Then spray some in the area where you think the leak is located. You'll be able to see the food coloring gets sucked into the leak if you correctly spotted it.

Fix The Leak

Repairing your pool liner will not require draining your pool of water. Thankfully, it can all be done underwater if you have the right tools for the job. Start by creating a patch with new pool liner material, which will be slightly larger than the hole in the liner. Ideally, it should be an inch or two larger than the hole.

Then you can apply bonding cement to the underside of the patch, making sure to cover the entire surface of the patch. In order to preserve the bonding cement as much as possible, you'll fold the patch in half while it is above water so that the liner material is completely touching each side. You can then submerge the patch underwater and take it to the place that it needs to be applied to.

Slowly open up the patch and press it against where the leak is located. Smooth it out as much as possible, and remove excess bonding material that leaks out from the side. You'll then need to apply pressure for a minute or two until the bonding material dries and sticks to the leaking liner. This can be difficult to do if the leak is at the bottom of the deep end of the pool, so consider using a weight to hold pressure on the patch so you do not need to hold your breath underwater.
